Our
vacation was a blast. Anyone that has been putting off
taking a few days away, I would suggest just doing it.
You can find some pictures from our vacation by checking

We'll be posting some more as we get a

Search Engine Summer
Lesson 3- Types of Search Engines
+++++++++++++++++
There
are basically five types of search engines - understanding
this will help you when you start the promotion process.
Directories
-
These
are human reviewed listings of sites. Usually this is
done in categories. You may have to pay to have a listing,
others you can get into free.
Examples
-

http://dmoz.org/
Spyder
(crawler) based search engines -
Results
are gathered from the web as spyders crawl the web.
Using various criteria (which we will go into detail
later), results are reviewed and sorted.
Example
-
http://www.google.com/
Pay
per Click -
You
pay for a ranking, the ranking with the highest bid
price is listed first.
Example

Combination
-
Search
engines take results from pay per click, spyder search
engines, and/or paid listings.
So
how does all of this work - one of the best pages I
have seen that shows the relationships can be found
here -

Print
the page -
Now
let's dissect a listing. The search engine we'll look
at is MSN.
You can also click on the logo.
There
main search results come from Looksmart (Red Arrow)
Secondary results come from Inktomi (Blue Arrow)
Sponsored listings come from Overture (Yellow Arrow)
Top ten from Direct Hit (Pink Arrow) - one note - as
with everything having to do with search engines, things
change. Direct Hit is now owned by Ask Jeeves....
It
is all a bit confusing, but as we progress with our
lessons, hopefully we'll make it a bit clearer.
Tools
This Week -------
This
week download wordtracker - we'll be using it in our
