Nothing
in this world can take the place of persistence.
Talent
will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people
with talent.
Genius
will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education
will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence
and determination alone are omnipotent. -- Calvin Coolidge
(1872-1933)

Search Engine Summer
Lesson 7- Getting ready for the spyders to visit. Tags
/ Content

Meta
Tags Demystified
Each
page of your website should be reviewed as if it stands
alone. Using the keywords list you made a few weeks
ago do the following (again individualize these for
each page).
If
you missed the issue when we talked about keywords you
can find it at the URL below.
-
Choose the top 5-10 keywords/phrases for the page.
-
The top three are going to be used in the Title for
the page.
-
The top five will be used in the description for the
page.
-
All 5-10 keywords will be used in the keywords for
the page.
-
The top five keywords will also be mentioned 2-3 times
within the first 250 or so words of text. We talk
more about text below.
How
the tags should look-
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Your Title </TITLE>
<META name="description" content="Your
description ">
<META name="keywords" content="keywords1,
keywords2, etc">
</HEAD>
Your
title- Make your title up to seven words in length-
use your top three keywords.
Your description can be up to twenty words in
length - use your top five keywords.
Your keywords tag can include up to 20 keywords-
do not repeat them. (Example- web design, website remodeling,
but not web design, web remodeling. Each keyword must
be unique.
Now take your keywords and mention them 2-3 times within
the first 250 or so words of text (no more than three).
We'll talk some about adjusting your keyword densities
in the lessons on tweaking your results.
Go to the next page and start at the beginning.
This process takes a lot of time, but it will be worth
the effort.
There
are some tags that we didn't list - one popular one
is the revisit tag - the search spyders visit your site
on their schedule, nothing you do (with the tags anyway),
will make them visit more often.
If
you want to exclude any pages, you need to build a robots
text file, but be VERY careful if you do this, if you
make a mistake you may tell the search engines not to
index any pages. My suggestion would be that if you
have pages you don't want indexed, you can always password
protect them.

Your
Content
In
order for your site to place well in the search engines,
your keywords need to be within the visible text of
your site. There is a fine line between spamming (adding
too many keywords within the text) and adding too few.
To start we'll add some, then as we work on tweaking
the site we'll adjust this.
Some
things to remember -
-
We want at least 250 or so words of text.
- Use your keywords at least 2-3 times within the text.
- Use at least one instance of the keywords as close
to the top of the page and bottom of the page as possible.
- Use your keywords as navigation links if possible.
- Use a keyword as the heading / header of the page
- bold or use a Heading format to make it stand out.
