A trifling kindness here and there,
Is but a simple, small affair,
Yet if your life has sown this free,
Wide shall your harvest be.

Search Engine Summer
Lesson 9- Tracking your progress ~ Checking your
rankings
+++++++++++++++++
This
weeks lesson is all about tracking your hard work to
see if your hard work is paying off. We've listed some
tools below to help you, but be warned - many of the
search engines (including Google) frown on using automated
programs to check your results. This is one reason that
we always check those listings manually for our SEO
clients. You can find googles position on automated
checking by following the link below.

You
can find what we just talked about in the 'don't' section.
Log
Files
One
clue that your website has been listed within a search
engine can be found in your log files. When you begin
to see referrals from a particular search engine - pay
a visit and search for some of your main keywords.
So
how can you check your log files.
->
Many hosting companies include a log file program.
-> You can use a free tracker - there are quite a
few of them listed at the link below.

The
related link - web counters has the most free ones -
just make sure that they include search engine referrals,
and you may have to include the count on every page
of your site.
There
are some other ways that you can check your position.
The following is a helpful web based utility.

Type in your URL and the keywords you want to check.
There
are also software programs that will help determine
your position, but like I mentioned before - the BEST
way is to manually check your results.
Agent
Web Ranking -
They
have a free version and a 'pro' version $500.00.
An explanation of the differences can be found here
-

Web
Position Gold -
They
have several different versions of the software - including
a free limited trial. If you want the position software
for free I would suggest Agent Web Ranking since their
free version is more robust.

This
is by no means an exhaustive list, do some research
online using the search engines and find the solution
that fits your needs.
