Search Engine Summer
Lesson 10- Improving your search engine ranking.

We'll
be having two issues on improving your search engine
position. If you don't like your ranking, you CAN change
your ranking. It just takes a lot of work. Today we'll
be talking about dissecting a listing, next week we'll
be discussing some ways to improve it.
One
thing to note is that you need to do the following for
each of your keywords, and a reminder you should only
be focusing on two or three keywords for each page.
Improving
your search engine ranking Step One -
Create
a worksheet or excel spreadsheet with the following
headings.
Keyword
-- Site Number-- Meta Tags -- Links -- Keyword Density
-- Notes
Make
sure to leave enough room in your table for 20 - 30
words.
Improving
your search engine rankings Step Two
Go
to google and search for the keyword phrase / term you're
working on improving.

If
you see pages that are obviously breaking some of the
search engine ranking rules - then report them. Below
are some email addresses / website URLs that you can
contact.
Google:

Inktomi:

AlltheWeb.com (FAST Search):
mailto:spam@fastsearch.com
AltaVista:

So
why should you report them - well think of it like this.
The more useful the search engines are for people searching
for product and/or services, the more they will use
them.
Step
Three
Record
the top five sites for that particular term - this process
actually works better if you use the top ten, but the
top five will work ok.
For
each of the five sites (or ten) do the following.
1.
Visit the site and view the source for the page.
2. Copy the Title, Keyword, and Description tags - not
DO NOT paste these onto your page - just paste them
in your notes for now.
3. Now we check the link popularity for the sites.
-->Go to link popularity .com
http://www.linkpopularity.com
--> put their url in the enter url box and click
Tell....
--> record the links count for Altavista, Hotbot,
and Google - you'll have to click to get those.
4. Next we want to check out the keyword density for
the site.
--> Go to keyword count.com
http://www.keywordcount.com/
--> Enter your url (for the page that has the keyword
you're checking)and the first URL from the google search
listings (note: as you progress with the analysis you
can put the next two urls from google in the boxes -
then the fourth and fifth url).
--> Record your results.
5.
Do the same for the next 4 results in Google.
This
issues article is pretty short on content - but it is
long on the work you have to do. Next issue we'll discuss
how you can use the data you've just gathered to work
on your site - we'll also be using an example site that
