Advanced SEO Techniques.
Finding your competition

This
lesson is short but contains a whole lot of work.
The first task in this lesson is to create a spreadsheet. If you
have trouble creating it or just don't want to do it just send
us an email and we'll be more than happy to send you one we've
created. On a side note we're in the process of moving, so if
it takes me a day or two to get back to you, I haven't forgotten
about you.
Creating
the spreadsheet.
1.
Start a new spreadsheet.
2. Across the top list your main keywords to focus on - I would
at least use the main one for each page you're going to work on
optimizing. In the block make sure to combine four cells.
3. Down the left side we want to name the following rows.
a) Site url.
b) Meta Tags
c) Keyword Density
d) Page rank
e) Back Links
f) Page highlights
g) Anchor text
h) Keyword positioning
Visit
Google and type in the keyword for the column -
List each of the top 3 urls in the Site URL column, then your
URL you'll be optimizing for in the fourth column -
Continue until you have finished all the keywords.
Next
week we'll talk some about dissecting your competition.

If
you haven't downloaded Google's toolbar yet - we'll be using it
quite a bit in the next lesson, so make sure to download it.

I
had a lunch date with an old friend of my Dad's who was in town
for the day.
I
run a home business so I'm always up for a lunch that isn't delivered
to my door on a bicycle.
Even
better if the other person is paying.
This
guy, Frank, was an executive in the telecommunications industry
back when that was basically one company. That was the company
he worked for, the mother ship. He was a nice guy. Pretty funny,
too. He didn't have much use for Wall Street, always called it
"the big casino downtown." He has a way of putting things that
gets right to the point.
I
tried to talk to him about investing one day. In the middle of
a long downturn, the market shot up 200 points.
I
called him and asked, "Why do you think the market went up today?"
I waited for the lesson to begin.
"Because
it got tired of going down," he replied.
After we ordered, he asked me how my business was going. I've
got an online retail site. I told him I was getting pretty down
about the whole thing. "How are sales?" he asked.
"I'm
just treading water," I told him. "I've got a couple of big accounts
that pay the bills, but nothing is growing in this economy."
"You
know it takes time to build a business," Frank said.
"I
know," I said. "It just feels like I'm beating my head against
a wall. Maybe I should get out and try something else.
"
Frank looked at me for a while. Then he said, "I'm going to tell
you a story. Did you ever hear about the man who was going to
swim across the Atlantic?"
"No,"
I told him, wondering where he was going to go with this.
"He
trained hard, got sponsors for the event. Started out one beautiful
morning. You sure you never heard this story?" I shook my head.
"He got three-quarters of the way across and decided he couldn't
go any farther. Had to swim all the way back." He waited a minute
to see if I'd followed him.
"So
when you feel like giving up, remember how far you've come. Don't
quit on your business when things aren't going as fast as you'd
like. Hang in there and see it through."
So
the next time you feel like giving up online, just remember what
Frank said: "Work hard. Hang in there. Don't lose everything you've
accomplished by quitting too soon."
